We offer flat and martingale-style collars in a variety of styles and with a plethora of customizable options. Understanding the differences between these two can help you select the most suitable collar for your pet's needs. Here's a comparison to guide:

Standard Flat Collars

The Standard Flat Collar is suitable for everyday wear and basic training. It's a good fit for most breeds and can be worn all the time, but should be removed if your dog is crated. Available in various designs and materials, flat collars are easy to put on and take off, especially those with quick-release buckles. However, flat collars not be ideal for dogs that pull hard while on leash, so understanding your dog's specific needs is essential.

Martingale Collars

Martingale collars are specially-designed for training and specialized needs, providing more control for dogs that pull, and breeds with slimmer necks and narrow heads. Unlike a standard flat collar, it's not ideal for constant daily wear and should primarily be used during walks or training sessions. Martingale collars offers a customized fit, especially for dogs with a tendency to slip out of collars, and provides gentle control without choking. Proper adjustment is required to ensure safety with this collar, and we offer both buckle and non-buckle options for almost all of our martingale collar styles.

A martingale-style collar is more than just an accessory for your canine companion. Its unique design and functionality make it a preferred choice for many dog trainers and seasoned pet owners. Escape-Proof Functionality

The genius behind the Martingale lies in its two-section composition - a fixed portion (neck loop) and a control loop. When you attach the leash to the D-ring on the control loop, it adjusts accordingly. This mechanism ensures that the collar tightens just enough to prevent your dog from slipping out, even with the most enthusiastic pulls, but will not tighten enough to cause harm.

Training and Manners

Martingale collars shine when you need to remind your pup about leash manners. The functionality of the control loop's gentle tightening discourages constant pulling. If your dog attempts to pull, a gentle reminder from your end can redirect their attention. If they persist, halt your walk momentarily. With time, they'll associate the sensation with the need to walk without tugging. Remember, if your dog keeps pulling, it might be time to seek professional training guidance for loose leash walking techniques.

IMPORTANT: A martingale collar is NEVER appropriate for tie-out use.

Additional Points to Remember

Appropriate Uses and Safe Times: Primarily during supervised walks and training. Although highly functional, it's best to remove a martingale collar when your dog is relaxing or playing unsupervised to avoid accidental snags.

Adjustment is Key: Like any collar, a proper fit is vital. Ensure that the Martingale offers a snug yet comfortable fit.

How do I measure my dog for their custom embroidered martingale?

For a standard flat collar or a martingale with a buckle, measuring is a simple process:

Using a soft measuring tape*, measure around your dog’s neck where their collar would normally rest. Adjust the tape until it is snug, but not tight. Record this measurement, and choose the available size that is closest to your dog's exact neck size, considering future sizing. (i.e. if you have a puppy who has an exact neck size of 13", but the sizes 12" and 14" are available, we would recommend sizing to 14" to allow room to grow.) This measuring technique is also appropriate for martingale collars WITH buckles.

For a martingale collar without a buckle:

For no-slip martingale collars without a buckle, you will also need to measure around your dog's head, from the top of the dog's throat, over the ears, to the top of their head.

*If you do not have a soft measuring tape, use a piece of string to do the measuring and then lay it flat to measure with a ruler.

Available Buckle Materials

Plastic - Plastic buckles are lightweight, durable, waterproof, and are included in the base price for all of our collars. They are strength rated for for almost all pullers

Aluminum - Aluminum buckles are the most heavy-duty option, providing both style and security in a compact package. Aluminum buckles aren't recommended for saltwater use.

A personalized, engraved buckle promotes the return of your dog in the unfortunate event that they do go missing. It has been reported that over the course of their lives, 33% of all dogs will go missing at least once. Better safe than sorry, we say.

We offer 3 lines of engraving with 15 characters on each line, offering you space to put your dogs name, phone numbers, microchip information, or whatever other information you deem important.

Standard (Buckle-Less) Martingale

This buckle-less design requires adjustment for a perfect fit. It's first adjusted to slip over the dog’s head and then fine-tuned for a snug fit once it is on the dog. Ideal for smaller dogs due to its lightweight nature, it remains durable even for stronger breeds.

Buckle Martingale

Designed for convenience, these collars feature a quick-release buckle, eliminating the need for constant readjustments. Perfect for dogs with larger heads or those who dislike their face being touched. It's especially favored for skittish dogs wary of a collar being pulled over their heads.

What is the best collar width for my dog?

Choosing the Perfect Collar Width

If It Barks offers most of our custom collars in three width options for you to choose from. 3/4", 1", and 1.5".

We generally recommend 3/4" collars for small dogs, 1" for medium to large dogs, and 1.5" for medium to extra-large dogs.

Note: 1" is the most common flat collar width, and 1.5" is the most popular width for martingale-style collars. Collar width is important to consider for your dogs comfort and safety.
